The BIG Picture!

A Techtite Weekly Feature

[...back, because you demanded it! -Ed.]

The "Big Picture" for the Last Week of July, 2004 is:

"Cat-astrophic...?"

(Catwoman, 2004, 1024x768 image)

Catwoman was one of those enigmas in gaming, in that its affect on you is dependant on two totally unrelated sources. Well, yeah; one of those sources is the movie, of which this game is a tie-in, but come on; how often does a blockbuster movie lead to a great game? Then consider how likely it might be, for the reverse to be true.

The other unrelated source is Spider-Man 2: The (Video) Game. I think I'll be spoiled for at least a few years of movie tie-in games after that one. How cool is it to be able to press a simple three-key combo, and suddenly see Spidey automatically hang enemies from his webbing, on any nearby light post on the street? The enemies even whine on occasion, "Ugh; why me..." Ha! Mind you; if I was comparing Catwoman: The Game to the horrible PC game of Spider-Man 2, I'd have to confess the honest truth: Catwoman is better! Yet when it comes to the Spider-Man 2 game on X-Box, PS-2, or Game Cube, there's no contest; Spidey on those game systems might even be Game of the Year fodder.

For your perusal, here's a snapshot of "Halle Berry" (complete with her own game voice; not included here!) in the game. The cat's eye she's looking at is one of many secret icons you hunt for, by doing various stunts during a level. Note the purple aura around her. This isn't my video card going fruity; it's a level map based on a dance club she sneaks into in the film. Not that I'm recommending seeing the film; I'm just admiring Halle's polygonal likeness in the game.
