The BIG Picture!

A Techtite Weekly Feature

[...back, because you demanded it! -Ed.]

The latest "Big Picture" is:

"Half Life 2, downtown"

(Half Life 2, 2004; 1024 x 768)

The time is upon us; Half Life 2 is finally out, and say what you will about the story; the graphics are fantastic. We'll be getting to the "story" comment in a bit, but for now let's say this is one of three "Big Bictures" in December which are all of Half Life 2; the characters, the "cinematics" (the conversations between nearby NPCs, that is), and the environments.

This picture is the first of three, and is in fact spoiler-free (no poetic rhyme intended). It's the first major shot you see after being "dropped" into this current time zone, wherever --or whenever-- this is. The video screen atop the tower shows the current human ruler of this land; the same guy who was apparently once your boss back in the first game. Note also the Combine troops stationed on the street. "What is going on here" is the question at hand, as the single player missions slowly take hold.

Don't be too ready for too many answers, though; the sole noteworthy gripe someone can make about this game. Few questions are answered from the first game, with only more questions added on top of them. The ending itself is as victorious as it is wide open. Let's just hope we don't have to wait another 6 years for a sequel, to answer even more questions.
