Winter 2000/2001

In the TV world there's "cheers and
jeers." In the movie world there's "thumbs up" and
"thumbs down." Well, here in cyberspace, there's dots and
slashes. What goings-on hit the "dot" right on the mark,
and which should be "slashed"? Here are Techtite's thoughts...

Got something worth Dotting
or Slashing? Send a note, and it might be added to the
latest list!
Each seasonal list is updated
periodically; newest entries at the top...
DOT
: To great news for fans of Defender of the
Crown. This
great game from 1986 earned a place in Techtite's elite list of Top 50
Multimedia Classics. Now, Cinemaware will make a game called Robin Hood :
Defender of the Crown, which is based on the classic game title. It will
be available for the PS2, Xbox, and PC. For a peek at the game's initial
conceptual art, click

Slash
: To decisive indecisiveness. Sex
and the City's Sarah Jessica Parker has a lot to say about the
President Elect, though what is it? As quoted by The
Washington Post, Sarah is allegedly "very, very concerned
about the Bush presidency," because, she says, "I'm worried
about the kind of cuts he might make in domestic programs that mean
something to
a lot of people, including people in my family who depend on certain
things from the government." What certain things might these be? She
didn't say. A cheerful DOT,
however, to the readers of the Post, who pondered why the
family of a successful celebrity would need domestic assistance from the
government. There will undoubtedly be many Democrats who'll disagree with
things Bush will do in the next 4 years. Until Sarah is sure what those
"certain things" are, I'd hope she chooses her battles
wisely...and,
perhaps, spread her wealth a little, to her family!
DOT
: To games beginning to use DVD the right way. Some
collector's editions of games this year, like the ones for Diablo 2
and Red Alert 2, include DVDs of their top-notch movie
quality video sequences. Such DVDs of the top notch FMV in games should be
considered often and without delay.
Slash
: To LucasArts promising something all year, then pulling
the plug just in time for the holiday season. I'm talking, of course, of
all the boasting of the Jedi knight game (and alleged Dark Forces
sequel), Obi-Wan, which they've been dangling like a carrot in front of PC
owners' noses for months now. As of November 21st, it seems this was all
talk; just a short few weeks after telling people that this intended
"holiday release" wouldn't be out until next year, now they say
it won't be out for PC at all. Instead, they'll release it for a game
system that's yet to even be announced. You almost know that Jar-Jar Binks
is involved in this dimwitted decision, somehow.
DOT
: To people who want to help cheer up Roy Conrad. He was the perfectly
chosen voice of the title character in the LucasArts adventure game, Full
Throttle, and is now, quite sadly, seriously ill
with cancer. To cheer him up, feel free to send him a letter telling him
how cool Full Throttle was because of him, or just send him a greeting, at

DOT
: When all is said and done, Electronics Boutique gets top
kudos from me, for dealing with Sony's Playstation-2 debacle fairly and
succinctly. I was one of the many people who had to be "knocked
off" the guarateed-by-October-27 list, thanks to Sony's manufacturing
blunder (in case you're not up on video game system news, they released
only half a million units nationwide, when they originally promised a full
million). EB came through for me, with a system that was available less
than two weeks later. For a system that might not get most pre-orders
completed until allegedly December in other stores, I'd say they handled
my pre-order very nicely. Thanks!
