Premiere Dot/Slash Page; 1999

Got something worth Dotting or Slashing? Send a note, and it might be added to the latest list!

In the tv world there's "cheers and jeers." In the movie world there's "thumbs up" and "thumbs down." Well, here in cyberspace, there's dots and slashes. What goings-on hit the "dot" right on the mark, and which should be "slashed"? Here's the premiere list...

Slash : To the folks at dailyradar.com, and their lack of respect for reader opinion. When an over ten page article online discussed why "Quake 3 is better than Unreal Tournament" (the latest macho shooter games du jour), thousands wrote in to say the reverse was true. Daily Radar's response, and I quote : "Normally, we would take this moment to salute the spirit of democracy, but let's not forget that Hitler was elected to office." How stupid is it to compare democracy to Hitler? About as stupid as writing ten-pages to retort the opinion of your readers.

Slash : To the folks currently making a "Blair Witch Project" game, and their total lack of foresight. Probably the foremost thing any gamer wants to do after seeing this sleeper hit, is to go into Blair Witch forest, Unreal-style, and kick the witch's butt all the way to OZ! No such luck; in a feedback that was uploaded here, one game rep says, "We are not doing Blair Witch using the Unreal engine, ok? We wouldn't be doing this game unless we felt we could do something worthwhile." Before the Unrealers bother debating the "worthwhile" crack about games using the engine, consider how boring a game will be that gives you a Xeroxed retread of the movie, providing for $50 what the movie itself gives you for $15. Bo-ring!

Dot : One HUMONGOUS, happy "dot" to Disney. One of the last great hold-outs for DVD has finally thrown their classic movies into the ring! Their Christmas gift this year to the DVD fan will be nine of their best animated features on a limited release schedule (60 days each, so grab 'em when you can!). Among the titles : Pinocchio (the first slated release, 10/26), 101 Dalmations, Hercules, Mulan, Lady and the Tramp, Peter Pan, Lion King II, Little Mermaid, and Jungle Book. Thanks, Mickey!

Slash : To G.O.D. This is the oh-so-cute acronymn chosen for a 3D-shooter game design team. It's supposed to stand for "Gathering of Developers." While it's harder each year to come up with an eye-grabbing game company name, this just seems like going a little too far. When a recent CGW issue put this natty slogan on their cover, several people complained...some even cancelled subscriptions! Cool games (Darkstone), poor choice of company name. Why not change it...?

Dot : Austin Powers' Heather Graham

Slash : Austin Powers' "Fat Bastard" (not pictured. You're welcome.)

Dot : Star Wars, Episode 2, will introduce Boba Fett. YES!

Dot : To Star Wars fans with a sense of humor:

Slash : To Star Wars fans withOUT a sense a humor. While getting Star Wars toys for my nephews, a pencilnecked sales clerk just couldn't help himself from telling me how awful the latest Star Wars was. In truth, I told him I liked most of it (except for Jar-Jar) and this made him even more steamed that I was buying items based on the movie. Gee, remember when a sales clerk was supposed to help make a sale?
