Some added "awards" worth mentioning:

Worst Body Double Chosen All Year: 3000 Miles to Graceland. Courtney Cox's fandom, via her prim and proper role in Friends, will have you believe that it's more than possible that her pale-white complexion could suddenly look like she had an allover tan, just coincidentally whenever she shows "her" backside in this film. Not likely.

...and the Golden Ottos for

2001 FILMS go to :

Best Movie of the Year, Overall: Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. This isn't some internet critic trying to appease the fantasy- book-loving 'net surfers. Nor is this a mere fanboy of fantasy films himself, who gives thumbs-up to every fantasy film tossed down the Hollywood turnpike. No; I'm just an old-fashioned critic who, horror of horrors, gives best-of honors to the most entertaining and fun film of the year. Remember when critics used to do that, and not tell us to see the latest maudlin sob story because unhappy endings are considered "artistic"...? To top it off, the most entertaining film of the year was based on a popular novel; that's good news. It also stars Ian McKellan, who no matter what that certain "other" awards ceremony will tell you, gave us the most memorable supporting actor's performance of the year ("You...shall...NOT...PASS!"). A great film.

Best Comedy : Shrek. Leave it to the Golden Globes, to give comedies the honor of a separate award from Best Drama, only to throw musicals into the mix, and give "Best Comedy/Musical" to Moulin Rouge this year. Forget the controversial schism of critics who equally loved/hated Rouge; Shrek was indeed the best comedy of the year, and to me, deserved that kudos far more than Moulin Rouge did for music. In a fairy tale best summarized as "for older kids who graduated from Toy Story," this modern CGI animated feature gets its best strength from implying that everyone --yes, even a caustic Ogre-- deserves to find love and live happily ever after. Granted, if you throw the dramatic films of the year into the ring, Shrek is left out. However, for best comedy of the year, I can think of no better recipient.

Best Drama : A Beautiful Mind. Like most dramas, this film gets its strength from two of the best acting performances of the year: Jennifer Connelly and Russel Crowe. Who would've thought the former teen star from Labyrinth, and the man best known as a Gladiator, would create such a well acted film? Of course, it helps that the film was directed by Ron Howard. The point is, this was a well directed and acted film, even if not my choice for Best Picture of the year. To those who'd say, "Isn't acting and directing enough for 'Best Overall Film' honors?" Well, no, for two reasons: 1) I sure as heck think the visually-stunning Rings deserved to win as much as Titanic ever did, and 2) I also think (much like Titanic) that Rings was the most visually stunning film of the year, regardless of the lack of Connelly/Crowe/Howard. I admired A Beautiful Mind...even if, comparatively, I loved Lord of the Rings.

Worst Movie of the Year : Freddy Got Fingered Since the golden age of bad comedies (the 1980's, if you wondered), I've never felt such an urge to revise my list of Top 10 WORST Comedies Of All Time, until this film's release. This totally mentally deranged script has Tom Green trying to make a joke out of simply staying home with his father and pestering him. You also get to see Green molest a horse! If that sounds like fun to you, you're a TOTAL IDIOT. Often, I am fair and impartial enough to offer an order link for all films reviewed on this site; in this case, I made an exception. How stupid is stupid? Tom Green left his wife Drew Barrymore --probably because she told him the truth about this film-- proving his reign as the biggest moron in Hollywood (at the moment). In the end, the only people happy this film was so bad, are Heather Graham and Chris Klein, who starred in merely the second worst film this year...

Dishonorable Mention : Say It Isn't So! How oh how can a movie year be so bad, that a total farce like this film is merely the second-worst film of the year? This is actually the typical comedy we must endure every year, when some twit thinks that all it takes to make another There's Something About Mary is a few revolting jokes and a cute girl. Well, yes, Heather Graham is cute, though seeing her character cutting off half her boyfriend's ear is not 1% as amusing as the "hair gel" scene from Mary. Likewise for the whole incest premise, which is just plain not funny.
