"A Christmas (Origami) Story"

A Techtite "Gift" for the holidays!

(A feature article for December, 2003)

Okay, so it's the holidays and you want a holiday feature article. Here's a good one; passed from person to person via a Xeroxed article from way back in the 1980's. It may seem a bit too "high school" for some readers, though this makes sense, since I first learned of this story in high school myself! In any case, even 20 years later, it's still a cool story to tell during a Christmas dinner...

FYI: I can't take credit for this story, nor do I know who can. Believe it or not: I originally read this story in an old science magazine in the mid 1980’s. I forget which magazine it was, though I still have a copy of the story, as Xeroxed from person to person ever since. Here is the story in its entirety; enjoy...

Before you tell this story, take a sheet of paper (any size will do) and give it the four folds shown below.

Use this paper to tell the following story:

Peter and Paul were both born on Christmas Day. But after they finished school, Peter stayed in their village and became a good Samaritan. Paul turned out to be a rogue and roamed the world plundering its good people. As fate would have it, Black Paul, as he was known, was hanged on Christmas Day, the very day Good Peter died.

When they next saw each other, they were climbing the golden stairs that led to the Gates of Heaven. Black Paul noticed that Peter was carrying a piece of paper (similar to the one you have now). "What is that?" asked Paul.

"It's my pass to heaven. Don't you have one?" asked Peter.

"I had one, but I lost it, " he lied. "Why don't you give me part of yours so that I can get into heaven, too?" Peter obliged. (Cut along dotted line A.)

As they got closer to the pearly gates, Paul began to get nervous. "Look, Peter, you have more of the pass than I do. That's not fair." "Oh, you're right!" said Good Peter, and he gave Paul half of the rest of his pass.

(Cut along B, and put the pointy part away for the moment.)

When they finally got to Heaven, Paul nudged ahead of Good Peter and presented his pass to the Angel.

"What's this?" the angel asked, raising an eyebrow. "It's all shredded up. Unfold the pieces, fit them together, and they will spell where you are to go." (Do this to "Paul's" pieces of the pass, now).

When Black Paul saw his destination, he howled like the devil. But he wasn't finished yet. "Wait a minute," said Paul. “I got this pass from the guy behind me. If I've got to go, then so does he, because he has part of the same pass."

The angel turned to Good Peter and said, "Let me see your pass. You will have to go where it indicates." (Unfold the last piece of paper, and Peter's destination will be clear.)

...Hope you enjoyed the story! Happy Holidays!
