------------- Sidebar : ------------- Not much this year, was there...? ...sadly, no. Even though some shrugged off Britney Spears' cross-generation Pepsi ads last year during the Superbowl, at least it was inspired and original, even for non-Britney fans. This year, I had to drag in trailers for no less than three upcoming films, to make this a "top 10" commercial list at all. They're good upcoming films, yes, and still...

Top Ten Best Superbowl Commercials
A Techtite Feature ArticlePerhaps even rivaling the game itself, each Superbowl Sunday, are the latest commercials that premiere that same night. Why not...? Superbowl commercial time is second to none in price, so the most expensive, most elaborate commercials are usually what is offered there (well, most of the time). What did 2003 have to offer in the way of novel ads...? Here were the ten best of them:
"The Hulk" Teaser. The Gist of It: Coming this summer is another Marvel character going to the live-action film screen. Jennifer Connely is in it, trying to do for this film what Kirsten Dunst did for Spider-Man. The effects look great, and quite frankly, so does the film. What Makes it Top-10-Worthy: Given the success of last year's Spider-Man, this is perhaps the next sure hit of the summer, second only to the Matrix sequel. Speaking of which... "The Matrix Sequels" Teaser. The Gist of It: Matrix Revisited is coming for the summer season, with its cliffhanger quickly resolved in Matrix Revolutions, coming for the holidays. What Makes It Top-10 Worthy: Nobody has seen anything "Matrix" worthy since the original film in 1999. This was a pleasant sight for Superbowl Sunday.
Miller Beer's Zebra Referee. The Gist Of It: A zebra is referee to a football game played by Clydesdale horses. He plays back the exact same replay video, over and over, until one of the spectators muses, "This referee is a jackass!" "No," muses his friend, "...I think that's a zebra!" What Makes It Top-10-Worthy: What a riot! What's more, while on the subject: Zebras would make better referees. Accept it. Reebok's Terry Tate: Office Linebacker. The Gist Of It: An office workplace gets Terry Tate as their "office linebacker." Take too many coffee breaks, you get tackled. Play computer games on company time...? Tackled. Forget a Cover Sheet on your Company Report...? Tackled. What Makes It Top-10 Worthy: Seeing lazy business types tackled and thrown against their office cubicle walls is a riot. Who wouldn't want to tackle that goofball whose goofing off always leads to more work on YOUR desk...? Bud Light's "Guy in a Clown Suit Enters a Bar..." The Gist Of It: A guy in a parade takes a break in a bar, asking for a Bud Light. The joke is, he's in a costume that makes him look like a clown doing a handstand, when in fact he's right-side up. You figure it out; as soon as the appalled barroom guests see where his mouth is to drink that bud light, the "clown" promptly asks if he can have "one of those wiener dogs." ..."I don't think so, pal," says the bartender. What Makes It Top-10-Worthy: While we're spared the PG-13 sight of a man in a hand- standing-clown-costume drinking his beer through the "backside" of the clown, we get it...and it's a howl. Bud Light's "dog wig" commercial. The Gist Of It: Dude on the street wants a Bud, can't go into the bar because he's walking his dog and "no pets allowed." He's desperate, so he puts the dog on his head as if he was a "reggae man" with long locks *(the dog). He gets served quickly (so he'll leave quicker, I imagine!), only to have his hair growl when a girl tries to touch it. What Makes It Top 10 Worthy: Not sexist either way --no women in bikinis, no dumb men next to their intellectually superior wives-- this is a good laugh for one and all...and FYI: a guy with his dog always makes for good TV commercials. It's a fact. Visa Check Card's Yo!/Yao/Yogi commercial. The Gist Of It: In another installment of celebrities not allowed to write checks even if they ARE celebrities, sportsman Yao tries to write a check, leading to the clerk pointing to their "no checks" sign, saying "YO!" "No, Yao," replies Yao. This goes on for a while until the Visa Check Card narrator talks about how you can use it like a credit card as it takes money automatically from your check account blah blah blah, only to return with Yao gone. Yogi Bera is there in his place, leading to another "YO!" from the receptionist. "No...Yo-GI," replies Bera. What Makes It Top 10 Worthy: Okay, so this is the bottom of the barrel in top-ten commercials on this list; it still is pretty funny, even if it will get mighty old in a matter of weeks. What's more; now that I think of it, it might not be the lowest of low on this list after all. Case in point... The cat-fight, "Tastes Great/Less Filling" Commercial, 2003 The Gist of It: In a PG-13 reprisal of the classic barroom fight of the 1980's --"Tastes Great!"..."Less Filling!"-- two ladies get into a cat fight when one feels Bud Lite tastes great while the other feels it's less filling. They wind up with half their clothes ripped off wrestling in cement "mud." In the next scene, we learn this is a beer commercial concocted by two guys in a bar, as they muse about their idea for "the perfect beer commercial," with their girlfriends looking on with dropped jaws, as if wondering if their boyfriends are that dumb. What Makes It Top-10-Worthy: I think I've had it up to my armpits with the kazillion shirtless men beefcake ads for ladies, yet not one similarly sexy ad for us men (no, those not-as-sexy-as-they-think Victoria Secret commercials don't count). Simply put, this commercial is of two sexy women in a cat fight. Cool.
