The Top Ten Things We'll Miss About Sex and the City

A Techtite Feature Article

Sure, like any sitcom it had its share of faults; we'll be getting to that. However, there's no doubt that we'll be feeling the lack of any new episodes for quite some time. Here's the top ten reasons why:

Four Friends and...that's it. What Made It So Cool: While this series had its share of sex (hence the title), it also had its share of friendship...and only friendship. So many sitcoms turn sour because some jerk feels that every male or female lead, if they get too close, must "experiment" with a sexual tryst during sweeps month. This series had friends that were only friends. Bravo! Why We'll Miss It: ...and let's be honest; how often do the lead stars of a sitcom not want to bed each other? Heck, even Will & Grace toyed with the idea of having a baby together. Why can't good friends simply remain friends?

The Adult Humor. What Made It So Cool: Every network sitcom seems tied to the family demographic that wants every single series on prime time to be suitable for even the littlest of tykes. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but it does reduce nearly all series to mere "kiddie" fare. This was the exception. Why We'll Miss It: Even HBO seems to be steering clear of R-rated sitcoms. Let's put it this way: I don't pay premium cable prices just to see what I can see on local TV.

Samantha. What Made It So Cool: I know you think I'm going to list every single lead character as a reason to miss this show. I'm not. No; I'm most going to miss Samantha; the definitive, 40-something, handling life by the edge of her seat kind of gal that makes cable sitcoms so great. She was a welcome piece of free-spirited openness that is rarely seen in any sitcom. Why We'll Miss It: Let's put it another way. If they edited this series for network cable, they'd have to cut almost all of Samantha's scenes. That's how all cable TV roles should be.

Three of the Four Leads Had NO "no nudity" clause What Made It So Cool: Not naming the name of the fourth who did have a no-nudity clause (or at least not yet), but consider: none of these four ladies needed to do a single nude scene. They were the stars, they called the shots, so they didn't have to do anything they didn't want to. The fact that 3 of them did agree to nudity when the story required it, is one of many examples of why this series succeeds; actresses willing to go that extra mile, even when they didn't have to. Why We'll Miss It: The truth hurts: if Friends was on cable TV, would any of those waifs dare a nude scene...?

Carrie Didn't Look "Glamorous." What Made It So Cool: As much as it may sound mildly insulting, you know what I mean. This series would've been so much less intriguing had the lead actress been a former "Playboy Playmate" or some teen-looking cutie pie. Carrie looked like any typical woman. Why We'll Miss It: How rare is it for an actress to not want to look "glamorous" every episode? I'm not kidding; just about every other sitcom starlet these days looks ready to go to a royal ball at the local golf club, not "real". You know what I mean.

The show never reached the "cartoon" stage. What Made It So Cool: The first sign of a sitcom going downhill is when the writers, totally drained of good ideas, begin to write as though they were drawing a cartoon. Characters begin to do stupid things they'd never do in the real world, simply because the series would be devoid of new ideas, otherwise. Thankfully, as questionable as this series' characters acted from time to time, they never reached the "cartoon caricature" phase. Why We'll Miss It: Admit it; not even Seinfeld ended before the characters began looking like cartoon caricatures of their former selves. Remember when Newman wanted to "eat" Kramer simply because he's covered in butter...?

Carrie's Notebook. What Made It So Cool: How rarely do we see people in sitcoms use computers? Carrie used one every episode, showing her contemporary lifestyle with every key press. Oh; and Carrie also prefers Apple Powerbooks. Cool. Why We'll Miss It: Several years since PC's became such a staple in everyone's lives, so few people use them on TV. Weird, isn't it?

Guest Stars Were Wisely Used. What Made It So Cool: While any sitcom can get a guest star or two, few know how to use them. More often the script writer feels they can get away with a simple quick appearance of the celebrity, cue the canned applause track and then have the guest offer a shtick or two. In this series, very rarely did a star get misused. What's more; they often lasted for many episodes, until that story arc could end. Why We'll Miss It: How many times does a major guest star appear for a sitcom's Thanksgiving Week episode...then never be seen again?

Guest Stars Were Wisely Chosen. What Made It So Cool: By a certain point, this series could've bagged just about any guest star they wanted. From the latest movie ingénue to the latest network TV star, just about anyone could've been cast for a guest role. Yet it's clear the guests weren't chosen for themselves; they were chosen as the people best suited for the roles they were cast for. Why We'll Miss It: As much as we like a splashy ad in TV Guide about this or that star in this or that sitcom; it doesn't mean as much when the role is so unsuited for them.

The snappy Final Credit Music. What Made It So Cool: The more I think of it, the more I miss the older age of TV, when each series ended with an instrumental of the theme music, not a mere commercial splash for what is about to be on the network in the next 30 seconds(!). Why We'll Miss It: Speaking of which; what is up with the way networks squish the credits to the side of the screen so you can't see them, only to show some commercial on the left side of the screen? If I can't even see the credits on a projection screen TV set, why show them?

...Of course, even the biggest fan cannot deny it's been a rocky road as well. Continue to the list of Ten Things we Won't Miss, and see what I mean...
