The Monkees: "The Christmas Show"

(Episode 47, 12/25/1967)

In the series' sole Christmas episode, Monkee style hyjinks were in full force. As you'd expect, the storyline involves a little kid who's lost the spirit of the holiday season, but who would expect the child to be played by Butch Patrick, perhaps best known as child vampire Eddie from The Munsters? The result is holiday gold.

The story is simple enough: a wealthy matriarch in a ritzy estate offers the Monkees $100 each to cheer up her son Melvin (Patrick). Well in typical classic sitcom style, everything they try goes wrong. They take him to a department store and Peter tries to ride a motorcycle, nearly wrecking the whole place (and himself) in the process. They go to choose a Christmas tree together, only to get in a hilarious battle with a very aggressive old lady, who insists she saw the "best" tree first. By the time things have settled down all the best trees are gone. They decide to go to the woods to get a tree, but Mickey mistakes poison oak for a batch of mistletoe and holly. They wind up using all the money they were given on medical bills from all their holiday mishaps. With nothing else to lose (or to afford), they realize that what they haven't tried is love. Mickey comes down Melvin's chimney as Santa, along with Davy as his elf. Mike and Peter come with a Christmas Tree. After a rough rendition of "Deck the Halls," Melvin's mom arrives and Melvin runs into her arms, having learned the true meaning of Christmas.
