Oscar's Biggest Mistakes In Best Picture HistoryA Techtite Feature ArticleEvery year brings new controversy for The Academy Awards. One year Brokeback Mountain's Ang Lee wins as Best Director, with Best Picture going to Crash. Just this year: Avatar barely wins any awards, with the most awards given to The Hurt Locker...a film which, good or not, few people even saw. Surprising? Absolutely. However; were either of these moments among the worst mistakes Oscar ever made? Sadly...no. I admit; this is old news. Every entertainment source has their own "10 worst Oscar mistakes" list. Empire's list awhile back included Around the World in 80 Days, A Beautiful Mind, Braveheart, Cavalcade, Forrest Gump, The Greatest Show On Earth, How Green Was My Valley, Ordinary People, Rocky, and Terms of Endearment. Similarly, Premiere's recent list included: American Beauty, Around the World in 80 Days, Chicago, The Great Ziegfield, The Greatest Show on Earth, My Fair Lady and Oliver. Everyone has their own "take" of Oscar mishaps. If you ask me, you must have sympathy for pre-1968 films. Prior to a little B-movie called Barbarella, there was no rating system in film. No ratings meant any 10 year old could trot to the theater and see any film. That was the "law" back then; which is to say, there wasn't one. This basically meant that every film pre-ratings-board had it much rougher, because they had to make all their films child friendly. No war movie could have any realistic violence. No crime drama could have any "grit." This, above all, is why you'll notice Techtite's list is all post-1968, because rated films had it easier. Oh, and as in all cases, every photo on the list is an order link for that movie. Call it "everyone is entitled to their own opinion," or call it "we don't want to get sued by a big name film company," yet overall it's just a Techtite tradition. If you liked it, buy it! No "worst" list is fairer than that. That said: "the envelope, please..." ------------------------------- What was your choice for best/worst Oscar Winners...?
