My latest Two Bits (March
12th
2010):
Milkaholics, Oscars,
and being not quite so "Lost"!
-------------------------------------------------------------------
These are all the
topical news stories in entertainment that peaked my curiosity in early
March. At worst: much like those funny Chuck Lorre "Vanity Cards"
during the credits of all his shows, these are the things that for
better of for worse, well, just came into my head at the moment. Bear
with me.
The Academy Awards: Hit
or MISS?
Foremost on my mind this week: the Oscars.
My full review
is on the TV page, though even more interesting is my "blog,"
of sorts, which is the first time I tried to put my fingers to a
keyboard "LIVE" while the show aired. The lady of the house was much
more supportive of this than I thought. However, I digress. Here's some
thoughts that didn't make the review or the blog.
In short, let me just say this: I really didn't think
Avatar would win. However, I felt that if it did not win, then maybe
Tarantino would win his first Oscar for Inglorious Basterds, and that
would be cool. Personally; I always felt that Pulp Fiction was robbed,
back in the day. It was the best picture I saw that year. What won in
its place? Forrest Gump. Do I even have to say it? Epic. Fail.
Though I don't tune in to see which underdog the
Academy voted for each year. I tune in for the show. That said: it
sucked. What moron felt that the Best Original Songs should not be sung
this year? Probably the same person who felt that the Best Original
Score category needed a good dose of "interpretive dance." You've heard
it many times, though let me just say it one more time, okay: The Hurt
Locker's Original Score, when translated into dance, results in..."The
Robot"...? Good gravy this Oscar night sucked. Let's move ON...
Lindsay Lohan Sues E-Trade (Yes; Seriously)
Here's a news byte I just read about that seemed
topical. Why? Well, each year as a lark I post my choces for the best
and worst Super Bowl commercials. It just is a simple fluff piece of
mine, mostly because these commercials cost millions to air during The
Big Game, and they are either very very good, or just plain awful.
However; I never would have expected that a Super Bowl commercial would
be so bad, it would actually be sued!
Among my
personal choices of really bad commercials this
year: the goofy E-Trade ad series, where that same stupid baby talks to
the camera and tells us he's a baby who loves the stock market.
AAAAAARRRRRGGGHHH this commercial series is getting on my nerves. What
the heck is the point, anyway? Do babies have anything to do with the
stock market? NO. If you are looking for a good stock broker, do you ask
a BABY which stock broker he chose? NO. If looking for a web site to
trade your stocks, do you go to the baby while changing his diaper and
ask if he recommends you buy or sell your Microsoft shares? NOOOOO! Top
all this idiocy off with the fact that: talking babies, E-Trade?
SERIOUSLY? The idea of a "talking baby" hasn't been seen in
entertainment since the movie Baby Geniuses...and that movie sucked!
Good gravy E-Trade; get a new commercial campaign. Now.
However, I digress. Seems that
the latest E-Trade baby
commercial ticked off Lindsay Lohan. It's the commercial that had the babies in a romantic love triangle (yes; I know. Stupid,
right?). The boy baby apologizes to girl baby that, hey; he
was too busy on E-trade to call her. Girl baby then asks if boy baby is
cheating on her with that "milkaholic" baby Lindsay. So, not to digress,
but: a baby who drinks milk is a milkaholic? Whatever. Lindsay insists that this ad was derogatory to
her. Actually, it's derogatory, period, though hey, Lindsay; if your
50 million dollar lawsuit can get this horrible dreck off the air, by all means, more power to you,
girl.
"Doctor Linus". The Best Lost Finale Season
Episode So Far!
I'm hoping if you're reading this, you're a Lost fan.
This week's episode was titled
"Doctor Linus," and was basically a glimpse at the nefarious Benjamin
Linus, in the so-called "alternate Earth" we've seen glimpses of since
the season premiere. In this alternate past/present: Ben is "Doctor
Linus," who has a PhD in Earth history. He's also suddenly a "nice guy."
Curious...
It's been said that the "how" and "why" to this
alternate Earth will not be explained until the finale. My guess: these
are the changes made after the castaways do whatever they must do on the
island, to "save the world." This whole series has never been about the
island, hence the series title. It's been about the people on the
island, each of whom are "Lost." Lost people, lost opportunities, lost
souls. Each episode in past seasons showed one of many moments in a
character's past where they made the wrong choice. While these choices
defined them, they also ruined them for life. These latest episodes
show, character by character, the successful lives and choices each
character now makes. Locke is married. Kate is still on the run, though
apparently, is actually innocent. Jack is no longer pretending to be a
dad with someone else's baby; he's a genuine father, and a good one, no
longer afraid of standing in his own late dad's shadow. Each episode has
been, in many ways, a "series finale" for that character. I've liked it
so far.
Though Ben's episode? This one was the best of all, so
far. The revelations in this episode are numerous. Alex is still alive,
as is Ben's dad. In fact; it's implied that Alex's mom Rousseau is alive
and well somewhere...perhaps even with her own husband? If the island
was destroyed in this reality she never got shipwrecked and
never...well, she never went crazy. Ben has the opportunity to make
things right with Alex, and he does. Personally I would've loved it if
his blackmail scheme worked and he was the new school principal, though
I guess that wouldn't mesh with the whole "redemption" theme, eh?
That's about it for my latest "two bits" this week.
Stay tuned next week when I offer more thoughts on Lost in particular.
I've heard the next episode finally reveals what happens to Sawyer.
Where's he go on the island, anyway?
