The My Two Bits editorial for February/March 2006 is titled : Why Hollywood Needs Its "Stone(s)" Back.
------------------------------------------------------------------- As I type this, a supposedly leaked, R-rated teaser of Basic Instinct 2 has been spammed all over the internet. I say "supposedly" because this little sucker is a major publicity kick for the movie, and it's unlikely that professionally well-edited footage such as this --perfect audio and all-- could've been "leaked" with nobody's knowledge. On the other hand(!): no, we're not completely sure how legal it is, as it includes totally R-rated footage and even more oddly, no title screens...so don't expect any links to it here. We found it easily, though, for free, at no less than three sites. If this video is at all legal, it'll still be there. Then come on back. We can wait... So what's the big whoop, as it were? Well I for one have to commend Sharon Stone for breaking what I would call the PG-13 rut these days. For almost a decade now, there have been movies that would've been blockbuster hits if the story was made as gritty as the subject matter demands. Yet apparently PG-13 makes more money so these stories are watered down for a junior high friendly audience. Don't think I'm just talking about nudity. Yes, Pearl Harbor, I'm looking in your direction most of all, as I have since your lackluster release. But in a world where no-nudity clauses aren't uncommon, one must commend Sharon for having the (ahem) stones to go the whole ten yards. In short: yes, she does all her own nudity in this movie. You go girl. Does this mean I think that an actress must be willing to be nude in order to be a "real" Actress? Far from it. But you must give a role what it requires. Once upon a time, Reese Witherspoon was in very risqué roles like Cruel Intentions, where she met her now-husband, Ryan Phillippe. But now she's a mom --which is pretty cool-- so she goes for roles she could show her kids ...and when that includes films like Walk the Line, that's totally cool. What wouldn't be cool is if she was like other young actresses in Hollywood, who want to be in seductive roles but don't want to do anything seductive. What's worse; they want to be in movies about sex and sensuality, yet they insist for a no-nudity clause in all their contracts. That's just dumb. It's in this why Hollywood still needs Stone, until it has its own "stones" back, as it were. There was a time when Hollywood knew which baskets to put its apples, oranges, and yes, its lemons into. Now it's all "who got the People's Choice Award this year" and "No really; we think an actress fresh from a TV sitcom role would be perfect for this gritty drama." This is wrong on so many levels. It's been said that over 90% of the Screen Actors Guild is unemployed at any time. Choose the actress that is not only right for the part, but is willing to be right for the part. If you are going to film a movie called Closer, and that movie requires a stripper, don't give the role to Natalie Portman if all she's willing to do is wear a sequined bikini. Natalie, we love ya, but that ain't playing the part of a stripper, girl. Sorry. Yeah; I know what the kiddies out there are crying, in defense of their favorite 20-something, PG-13 actresses. Sharon was born in 1958. There's this belief that when a woman passes 35 her days of being sexy are over. Let's save the melodramatic "Is not! Is not!" rant for another editorial. Just look at this from another perspective. The idea is that old people are bony and shriveled up and unappealing. Well, has anyone seen the bony, shriveled up figures of most young actresses lately? Not only does young Hollywood not have the "stones" to pull off a Basic Instinct role, but most of them don't have the body to do it, either. It's a sad fact of Hollywood that, until fixed, still needs Sharon Stone to fill the void. Yet films are only as good as the story behind them, and that alone is where Basic Instinct 2 may fail. The script is anyone's guess. Will the script get people to watch? The "teaser" offers no clues. But at least Sharon still has the stones to give a role her all. If only young Hollywood did the same thing. As Always: I'm Techtite,
and these are My Two Bits...
