My latest Two Bits for the week ending:

Friday, January 16th, 2009

-------------------------------------------------------------------

A New Year, A New "Bits".

So begins the new weekly format of My 2 Bits. Personally I love this idea. It makes so much sense I'm surprised I've been too busy to consider implementing the idea until now. Simply put: this editorial will be updated weekly to coincide with the web site's weekend updates. What TV, movies, and other media caught my interest? Here's where I will break with tradition, stop simply being "informative," and speak my mind for awhile.

That...Galactica!

It sounds strange coming from someone who, by his own admission, didn't care much for the 2003 Battlestar Galactica mini-series. However, through many ups and downs, the "re-imagined" Galactica has kept my interest, right up to this week, when Sci-Fi channel aired the first of the series' 10 final episodes. Sure it's a bit presumptuous for me to admit that I'm not a diehard fan of the show and then review the latest episode, though let's be honest: you definitely want an agnostic opinion on this one...unless you actually enjoy reading the one line "reviews" from many a fan forum ("Frak this is great" ..."Yeah, frak!" ..."Tee-hee, frak!" ..."Frak Frak frakity-frak!")...

Mind you: this editorial presumes you aren't a total goober and watched the episode, and aren't saving it for your 40th birthday or something. If you really don't want to read any spoilers, I politely suggest you click here to jump to the next part of the editorial.

That said, let's cover the first big ballyhoo: the 12th Cylon. Seriously, all I can ask is...seriously?!? This 12th Cylon was supposed to be a big deal. Heck; in one episode, Lucy Lawless supposedly sees the 12th Cylon and smiles, saying apologetically that she was so sorry to have been mean to this person, because she had no idea he/she was truly the 12th Cylon all along. Which brings us, full circle, to...seriously?!? There's no way this barely seen caricature of a character is the 12th Cylon. How horribly disappointing.

Then there's the big reveal of Earth's fate. We already know it blew up, from the cliffhanger of last season. Now we learn it blew up 2000 years ago. We also learn it was, allegedly, an entire planet of Cylons. Look; we all love a plot twist here and there, though come on now. They supposedly made it to Earth. Earth is not populated by 12 different people who all look the same. Nor is it populated by women whose backbones glow like Christmas lights during sex. Where are they going with this?

Then there's one character's suicide. The idea is that this character is suicidal after picking up a bunch of toy jacks. The problem: these are 2000 year old toy jacks. The idea that this person would commit suicide after seeing a 2000 year old child's toy is like someone committing suicide after visiting the Tutankhamen exhibit. Fanboy rants notwithstanding; I hope they are going somewhere with this, because this suicide is completely asinine, otherwise.

I'll refrain from nitpicking about other gripes until I see the whole ten episodes of the final season. So let's jump right along to...

24 is BACK!

Not only is 24 back; they aired four hours in just one week. There's a lot to cover here and I'll try to keep as spoiler-free as possible, aside from the obvious spoilers that anybody knows already.

For one thing: Tony is alive. I know! The idea is second only to Bobby Ewing's "resurrection" on Dallas. The good news is that, unlike Bobby, his return isn't explained stupidly. Which is to say: no, everything since Tony's death has not been a "dream" of Jack's while arrested by the Chinese. Tony is alive and well, and working undercover. Jack, of course, must help him.

The stage setting for this episode looks promising. Cryptic spoilers notwithstanding: everyone I wanted back for another season, is back. The government has closed down CTU for good (and with how inept that "unit" was, who can blame them?), though tell that to the bad guys, with Jack asked to return into action yet again. There is yet another batch of people who might be working for the wrong side, with Jack once again wondering who is friend and who is foe. Some ex-fans have claimed this formula is getting old. I would have to politely disagree.

The Golden Ottos

As a parting thought; the latest "Best of" list is up, which this site refers to as the Golden Ottos. Why Otto? Well, for newbies to this site: Evil Otto was one of the most memorable smiley faces in the history of arcade games. With every major award given a human nickname, it seemed obvious what the name of a media award should be. If you want to see this web site's take on the best in Movies, TV, games, and more; just click here and...enjoy!

...That's about it for the first "weekly" editorial. Until next week!
