My Two Bits for November, 2003 is titled :

Robin Williams, Multiplayer,

and You...

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Every time I hear of multiplayer gaming, I think of Robin Williams. He had an interview where he mentioned how he, himself, had tried multiplayer gaming, not too long ago (or was it long ago? Don't tell me; I don't want to know!). He commented on how he was turned off from the idea because he simply couldn't live long enough to enjoy it; some stupid sniper would shoot him before he could stay in the game 5 seconds. He'd enter an arena at the start of the game when BAM a sniper would get him, then his character would rejuvenate when BAM BAM he'd get shot down again, in all of a few seconds longer. It made for a funny joke, though when you consider how this is the core flaw of multiplayer gaming, it isn't as funny as it should be.

Consider what this could've done for multiplayer gaming, had Robin Williams said it was totally cool. Imagine, if Robin Williams promoted multiplayer gaming to his friends, so every comedian and dramatic actor and actress was online. Imagine if the word was out that multiplayer gaming was "cool" and "chic" to a new-millennium Hollywood. Imagine celebrity multiplayer matches against, say, The Rock, Vin Diesel, or even Mike Meyers in full "Dr. Evil" mode, promoting their latest action movie. Imagine, best of all, if LucasArts could bring in Natalie Portman and Ewan MacGregor into the world of multiplayer gaming, to promote games like Star Wars Galaxies!

Cooooool.

All this would've been possible, if Robin had been able to simply say he had a good time online. No; instead, some prepubescent dork hyped up on sugar-coated cereal had to do what all multiplayer kiddies do; hide in the shadows --cheating, if you ask me-- waiting for whomever passes by, only to shoot them in the shadows long before they can even enter the game. Robin was turned off from multiplayer gaming ever since. The problem is; so have many gamers. Multiplayer gaming should be far more popular than it is, and yet...it isn't. Considering that the problem are these sniper-cheaters --a problem that could be so easily averted-- this is a real travesty

You'll note this is a shorter editorial than most. I've been known to ramble, on occasion, so I thought I'd keep a long story short for once. Yes, for once I'd like to not live up to a comment made in sixth grade, of me being "Most Likely To Become Editor For Reader's Digest." So; no rambling from me this month. That isn't to say this isn't a major topic, though. This is just something to think about, when eating a whole lot of Thanksgiving turkey. How cool would it have been to the world of multiplayer gaming, had one idiot sniper-kid not sniped Robin Williams, like the jackass that snipers always are...? The world may never know for sure, and that is a real shame.
