My Two Bits for November/December, 2004 is titled :

My Shining Half Star...

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Personally, I love the Techtite Ratings System. It helps my love for it that I helped design it, but...it's just unique, you know? I like it. The "impact" of various entertainment products as seen in more than the typical one out of ten scale, or the even more standard five-star-rule. That's what the Techtite ratings are all about; impact. Is the movie, not unlike actual tektites, a "deep impact," or is it just a small crater? Then again, there are movies that miss the mark yet could've hit hard, and...well you get the idea.

However, there's no denying that a five-point ratings system, as pictures, has its flaws. What about the "half star" factor? There's no such thing as a "half crater," after all, so how fair is it to include, say, something that just barely made the "Large Crater" grade, with something that just barely missed a "Deep Impact"...? Many movies, in particular, are not a perfect two, three, four, or even five stars; most are somewhere in between.

I've actually discussed this for some years in my reviews. Back at the turn of the millennium, Diablo 2 just barely made "Deep Impact" status, while Thief 2 hit it dead-on. Without that half star, there's little chance of knowing this, visually. This must change. So begins a new era in Techtite.com, where we include the five star rule...underneath the still-cool icons, of course.

Which brings me to this month's editorial topic: the new ratings system...well, "new" in a sense. Techtite.com will keep the original rating system, but with a five-star meter underneath. Ratings in the 0-1 star range earn a burnout, with up to 2 stars being Near Miss, right on up to the Deep Impact grade.

Suffice to say that it's near the middle of the month, and for now I see little or no viable editorial topics, so I thought I'd mention this topic instead of the other option, which was to just spring the new icon system on our readers without any acknowledgement or explanation. How does the new format fare? Let me know. I'd love to have any input you'd like to give.

As Always: I'm Techtite, and these are My Two Bits...
