The latest My Two Bits editorial (March 2007) is titled :

What's In Your Wallet Brain?

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Sometimes an annoying trend doesn't hit you right away. I guess some people would call that The Disco Principle. It takes awhile for people to sober up and figure out, what the heck am I watching, or worse, what the heck am I doing? The latest trend that just now began to annoy me: those "get more rewards from us" credit card commercials. Yeah, I know; am I slow or what?

You've seen these commercials about a thousand times by now, I am sure. Some guy can't wait for the rewards from his credit card. So he gets a full lobotomy and does something stupid. Okay; so I'm not sure about the lobotomy. The guy just tries to, say: bike ride without a bicycle, forces his family to vacation with cannibals, or (almost as worse) goes to a crappy vacation spot because he expected a more expensive vacation to be given to him for "free" as a "credit card reward". I've changed my mind. I'm totally sure these losers had a lobotomy. How else can such idiocy be explained?

Yes, it's nice to get reward points. Do they earn you gifts? Only to a certain extent. Credit Card Companies are not Goodwill. You don't buy a pack of mallomars and have a credit card company say, "This guy's credit report mentions mallomars? I love mallomars! Give that man a free bicycle!" No; you're unlikely to get a free bike, friend, until you use enough credit to buy a car. It's funny, because it's true. You buy the equivalent of a new porche on credit, then you can get a free bike. Yet this commercial campaign seems to imply that these guys are unable to simply buy a cheap bicycle, yet they would've gotten one for free with "the right credit card"...? I doubt it....severely.

It's the invisible bike rider that gets me. What's particularly annoying about this commercial is how this guy isn't just an imbecile because he has a bad credit card; he's an idiot, period. He actually tries to "bike ride" down a hill that would be stupid to slide down, even if he was on a bike. Of course, "stupid is as stupid does"; his friends seem totally cool about going around in public with a doofus pretending to ride an invisible bike. Whoa; nice friends ya got there, man. Maybe if they were better friends, they could've lent you a bike. Of course, they're idiots too, so...not.

Oh...and do you notice no silly women are ever in these commercials? I always wonder what commercials are trying to tell us. Do they think that a woman who makes mistakes isn't "funny," or even worse, do they assume women lack the security to see their own gender make mistakes? What is it with this outdated Homer-Simpson-style philosophy where every man can be fat and stupid yet every woman must be skinny, flawless, and brilliant? Some people think this is a great message for young girls. Is it? If you make a mistake it's okay, girls. Don't listen to the idiocy the "idiot box' is telling you.

The real testament to a stupid commercial campaign, however, is in the participants not being real people. It's nice if someone gets a free bicycle, but come on. You want a bike? Buy the bike, you freaking cheapskate. Of course; what should I expect from a cheapskate company, that's too lazy to buy a better commercial after airing the same ad a zillion times by now? Yeah, we get it. Imbeciles don't use your credit card. Too bad the only new credit card applicants you'll get from this ad campaign are idiots. Think about that one...and please, enough with the idiot on the invisible bike.
