Alone in the Dark

(Infogrames/I-motion, 1992/93)
This particularly
creepy game (in a good way!), was based on the works of H.P.
Lovecraft. Its unique (at the time) approach to story telling
was via polygon characters, which were able to be detailed --even
on slow CPUs-- thanks to static backgrounds used to depict the
various "camera angles." This animation trick was to
be re-used in any number of similar games and Alone in
the Dark clones, including the ever-popular Resident Evil series. It also
spawned two sequels (at least). A thriller classic, that even
made it on Techtite's listing of Top
50 Multimedia Classics.
