Four Crystals of Trazere

(aka, "Legend," and "Empire" overseas)

(Mindscape, 1992)

Using the same intriguing isometric perspective game engine that led to D/Generation, The 4 Crystals of Trazere was an RPG concept way ahead of its time. In some ways, it had intriguing game concepts, that have yet to be duplicated! Instead of only one character at your control, a unique 4 characters are in your control at all times: a Troubadour,  an assassin, a berserker, and a runemaster. It's the runemaster --otherwise best described as the "magician" in this game-- where the game truly showed its merits in originality. While a spell-potion system was seen in slightly similar form in games like Elvira and Kyrandia 2, it was Trazere that did the concept the best. A separate screen would include the pestle, mortar, and any other items you found along the way, to create various vials of powerful spell potions.

Some minor limitations were also present, due to such a unique game environment. With so much land to traverse, there was often no real indication of where to go next, leading you to send your group aimlessly from city to city until one looked like the right place to go next. In addition, with games like Ultima VII allowing people to choose their own group, of up to 8 teammates, Trazere's static 4 teammates seemed a little sparce. However, it was still a lot of fun in its day, and given its possible inspiration for modern isometric games like Diablo, it deserves respect even more.
