The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
(Infocom, 1984, Apple][e)
If you played a single game in the 1980's, you probably have
heard of The Babel Fish Puzzle; one of the most classic, inspired
mind-benders in adventure game history. Well, here's the game
that put that infamous puzzle on the text-adventure game map.
True to the Douglas Adams books in every way, this game
is a classic to fans of either the book series, or Infocom text
adventures in general. Here's a taste of the game's setup : your character
first receives an eviction notice, saying that you must leave your house
before its demolished. Just when you think things can't get any worse, a
similar notice is given from an alien race; you must leave Earth
before its
demolished. As with most Infocom games at the time, the box included
several free items in the spirit of the game, to enhance the text-only
adventure experience. Among these items was a pin suitable for wearing,
and --what else?-- the eviction notices. Classic Adams humor makes this a
classic in the history of text adventures, any way you look at it.
