House of the Dead

[PC version]

(Sega, 1998)

This game was a hit in the arcade, and possibly on any home game unit with a game gun attachment. However, The IBM version has no such game gun compatibility, so what do you do...? Well, you wind up with a game that is a sort of test for your mouse reflexes. This reduces the game's value considerably, since you already have a 3D game engine that does not allow you to move through the house on your own; the character you play will automatically go in the appropriate direction, depending on which way is the clearest (ie, which direction you shot the most zombies). While this was amusing as an arcade game, the PC version pales in comparison to a less linear zombie thriller, like Resident Evil. Gamers should also note that the happiest ending is unreachable unless you're very, very, very good at shooting those zombies (or you use a cheat code)...

Rating : Small Crater.
