The Legend of Kyrandia, Book 2: The Hand of Fate
(Westwood Studios, 1993)
Yet another entrant into Techtite's list of TOP
50 Best Multimedia Classics, this game put you in
the role of Xanthia, youngest mystic of Kyrandia, who must journey
to the center of her world to stop it from being destroyed. Two
unique ideas, in addition to fun puzzles and storyline, put this
game above most of the rest. For
one, Xanthia's feminine charm has her changing her wardrobe with
a magic snap of her fingers, in each of the eight different lands
she explores (as any fashion-savvy sorceress would wish to do).
Second, a magic "travel cauldron," at the lower right
of the screen at all times, allowed you to mix various inventory
items found along the way, to create a number of amusing potions.
One or two potions even did different things if used for different
actions. Drink the snake potion, instead of dropping it, and
have Xanthia with temporary Medusa-type snake hair. Then hear
her gripe about possible split ends. It's humor like this that made this
game a thrill to play, and made me think of Xanthia as the definitive game
heroine. Why Westwood never gave Xanthia another go in another sequel is beyond me.
