Manhole
(Cyan/Activision, ca. 1989, Macintosh)
Once Bill Atkinson created Hypercard, just about anyone could
make an amusing little program for the Macintosh. Among them
all was Manhole, a cute game designed by a pair
of brothers, who wanted to make somthing amusing for their little
kids. The premise was that you entered a magic manhole, and found
a whole new fantasy land to explore. Gameplay was simply point-and-click,
and yet just about everything clicked on would result
in an amusing sound or animation; cute fun for kids. This CD-only
game also included well chosen classical music clips as well
as graphics that were as well done as any classic children's
book. By the way, these same game designers were the ones who
would go on to make Cosmic Osmo,
and later, the infamous MYST!
