Nightmare Creatures
(Activision/Kalisto, 1997)
This is a fantastic game on many levels, yet marred
by a few, tiny gaming mistakes. On the plus side, graphics are
excellent, and provide an effective atmosphere; the foggy streets
of old, 19th century London. Monsters are of the "creatures
of the night" variety, and each is created with excellent
care to detail and animation. To defeat them, you can choose
to be (not unlike Deathtrap Dungeon)
one of two characters; the noble monk, Ignatius, or the sword-wielding
female, Nadia. Each has special moves that can cause additional
damage if done correctly; a little bit too much like Mortal
Kombat for my tastes, though acceptable.
Which brings me to the game's flaws The game suffers
an obscene amount of "console-itis," and you know what
that always means...! Game saves can only be saved at the end
of every loooong level! This is a challenge to the highest degree,
when you only have one weapon throughout the whole game (!);
either the staff or the sword (you can imagine how weak these
are against a stone gargoyle!). Worst of all, my choice
for one of the Worst Game Features Of All Time; an "adrenaline
meter" --essentially a time meter of how long it was since
your last fight-- kills you automatically simply
for exploring a level, or even if you get lost! What a
terrible shame; the rest of the game is fantastic (so much so,
it still warrants a marginal thumbs-up rating). However,
these flaws were a bit too much...
