Of Light and Darkness

(Interplay, 1998)

Memories of The Fool's Errand on the Macintosh made me more than eager to see Cliff Johnson's latest offering in puzzle games. However, promotional material for the game implied that this would be an adventure game, not "just" a puzzle game, making some other game fans a bit surprised and disappointed. Much like the Fool's Errand, the only story here is via FMV video clips, which reveal themselves one-by-one as you complete the puzzles. This is far different from the standard adventure story, where you are a part of the story itself, with puzzles interwoven into the story (a big difference, when you think about it). Still, the puzzle was fun: 1) find various spirits, and 2) "free their souls" by finding out who they were in the real world, what weapon they used for their crime, and what sin they committed. While this seemed at times not unlike the classic board game Clue, it was often far more complicated than just that. The Full Motion Video "rewards" at key parts of the game were a nice addition, with CGI graphics and the voices of James Woods ("evil") and Lolita Davidovich (the "angel"). To top it all off, the game's excellent artwork was all done by one, very inspired artist, named Gil Bruvel (check out his site to see some of his intriguing works, here!). While the ending was lackluster, the puzzle experience was amusing. For me, it was very worth playing.
