Overseer

(Access,1998)

This was the last (?) in the Tex Murphy mystery series, for two sad reasons. First, the plug on Tex Murphy mysteries was pulled --if only temporarily-- apparently because of Overseer's less than stellar sales. Second, Access was bought out by none other than Microsoft, who apparently were only interested in Access' Links golf game series; all other Access game series have probably seen their last sequel. This is even more annoying when Overseer's finale includes --you guessed it-- the ever dreaded Open Ending. However, the game itself was intriguing, including the option to play the game on the 5 regular CD-ROMs, or on the single DVD (both included in the same box; how generous!). Some have said the story was a mere re-tread of the original Mean Streets, though I never saw such a resemblance, except for one or two puzzles. Adding to the fun, much like the two prior episodes in the series, were actual Hollywood actors in amusing cameos, including Michael York. Still, it wasn't the best way to end such a memorable series; open ending!
