Pandemonium

(Crystal Dynamics, 1997)

This PC port from a Playstation game involved two young friends in a fantasy land : the court jester Fargus, and Nikki, an Enchantress-in-training. Nikki is making spells from an old spell book (stolen, of course) to impress Fargus, when she casts a spell she shouldn't have; a monster appears, and gobbles up the whole neighboring city, right before their eyes! They must correct this mistake by following a dangerous route to a magical realm, to obtain the power that will defeat this monster. Although 3D, the game was (oddly enough) 2D in movement; you could only go forward, backward, up, or down (you couldn't turn off the path, nor choose an alternate route). While this limited the options you can make in the game, the obstacles on this "path" were amusing, as was the game itself. However, the game's PC version was only 3D accelerated on 3Dfx cards, and, just a few years later, is already incompatible with most modern PC setups. Therefore, I can only recommend this game's original Playstation version, which has no such compatibility issues. Either way, it's only a -small- recommendation...
