Rise of the Dragon

(Dynamix, 1990)

Once upon a time, there was a sub-company of Sierra OnLine's, called Dynamix. Essentially, it was the "Touchstone Pictures" to Sierra's "Disney." It offered grittier, PG-rated game titles, while Sierra kept true to its artistic, award-winning fairy tale sagas (King's Quest, Space Quest, and so on). However, any sub-company needs one whale of a game to get its presence known, from the very start...and Rise of the Dragon definitely fit the bill. It's tough-as-nails premise of a mutant drug took many Sierra fans by complete surprise, as well as the murder mystery that unfolds. Its graphics were also a unique approach, using the type of new-age cartoon style of drawing that would soon become popular in modern, macabre comic books like Spawn. The end result was a thoroughly gripping tale, far better than most of the movie/TV offerings at the time. It's even on Techtite's list of Top 50 Multimedia Classics. However, regardless of the amusing atmosphere of a futuristic metropolis, as well as the rogue character "Blade Hunter," no sequels of this game were ever made. What a shame.

Rating : Deep Impact.
