Space Quest IV: Roger Wilco and the Time Rippers

(Sierra On-Line, 1991)

Unlike Space Quest 3, this sequel to the popular series couldn't get by on merely a few "tweaks" to the game engine. Sierra's just introduced, critically aflamed icon-interface (first shown in King's Quest 5) only made things worse, with ridiculously simple point-and-click puzzles. This is a shame, because the plotline was quite inspired : a villain from "Space Quest XXI" has gone back in time, to SQ4, to defeat Wilco! However, few locales are reached via this premise; the only places you get to go to are an interstellar shopping mall, and the cantina of Space Quest 1 (whose original lower-res graphics are played for laughs). The finale of the game teases at "other" sequels, that are clearly far better than this one. In truth, this game was so ill received, it almost finished off the whole series! How's that for dealing with the threat of future game sequels...?

Rating : Near Miss.
