The Secret of Monkey Island II: LeChuck's Revenge

(LucasArts, 1992)

When a game tries to poke fun at The Empire Strikes back by making a boyish pirate wannabe suddenly the brother --BROTHER?!?-- of an ancient, half-dead pirate zombie, it has to be Monkey Island 2. Only a 1992 adventure game could be stupid enough to end a game with an open ending "shocker" like this, when they weren't even sure they'd continue the series at all!

An amusing sequel only in graphics, this game left our hero, Guybrush, stuck in an open ending for no less than five whole years! Why did it take so long to resolve the finale? The problem is typical; gamers heard of the open ending, and decided to wait until that open ending was resolved. This meant the game didn't sell well, leading to accountants at LucasArts to interpret this as a sign the series was no longer wanted. Wrong; it wasn't selling, because you didn't finish the story ...DUH! Fortunately, eventually, Curse of Monkey Island made up for all this game's mistakes. Until then, Lechuck had defeated Guybrush! Bummer.
