Shipwreckers!

(Psygnosis, 1997)

Excellent music and admirable 3D acceleration effects make this a fun game release, from the same company that would soon make Drakan (in 1999). It involves a group of comedic pirates as they journey a riverbank (thin waterway) for treasure and ship supplies. Amusing challenges include fireballs that, if they hit the ship, cause the whole ship to catch fire! This causes some of your crew to abandon ship with a scream, and you'll have to get them back (essentially, run them over with the ship) before your whole crew is gone. Meanwhile, enemy ships and gun turrets (on the shores nearby) attack, and you must defeat them. You also have to keep track of ammunition, ship "health"(?), and ship lives(???), in a game that is often a bit too arcade-savvy for its own good. Sure, it's a cute game, and it is often a fun ride on the seven seas. However, limited lives, plus a bad case of console-itis (game saves are only offered at the end of each level), make this game a bit too challenging. That's a shame, because as-is, it's a really cute game concept...until the "game over" video appears.
