Star Trek The Next Generation: Klingon Honor Guard
(Microprose, 1998)
This game is definitely not to be confused with
Klingon Academy (although, inevitably, it probably
will). This was one of many games to license the Unreal
game engine, with attempted, added "tweaks." In this
game's case, the added tweak was in the form of lackluster FMV
cutscenes, which quite frankly never worked very well, until
a much-needed game patch! The rest of the game has a lot to thank
for Unreal's game engine
itself, with excellent lighting, 3D acceleration, and special
FX galore. Trekkies will love the fact that this game engine
is used towards fighting various Klingons, as well as other classic
Trek aliens and adversaries. It's also more than a bit amusing
to walk the decks of various Klingon star ships, including the
infamous Bird of Prey. On the bad side of things, the
game seems to overuse the color red a bit too much, and
can often have amusing, unintentional humor in its game design
(throw a dagger at a nearby moon, while in "space,"
and see it stick to it like it's a cardboard prop!). However,
Trekkies may be left slightly impressed; 3D Klingons!
Cool.
