Tomb Raider 3
(Eidos/Core, 1998)
This is when things in the "Tomb Raider"
saga went a little bit too much off the subject. After
all, the title implies that Lara is searching for ancient treasure,
a la Indiana Jones, right? So why is she, at various moments,
hanging from a construction site crane in London, searching "Area
51" in Nevada, or freezing her tush off at the North Pole?
Well, apparently, she's looking for various artifact pieces,
which were all created by fragments of a meteor. This meteor's
fragments each contain unspeakable special powers, for the person
who holds them. Actually, once Lara obtains these pieces, it
would've been nice to see her able to use a few of these powers
herself (not unlike the cool additional puzzles of Indiana Jones and the Infernal
Machine). Unfortunately, she only is able to carry
these pieces of rock; nothing more...bummer. Some additional
game engine tweaks were nice --and it's far and away from being
a bad game per se-- it just seemed as if Lara wasn't raiding
tombs anymore. In a game series with that very concept in the
title, that's a tad disappointing...
