Torin's Passage

(Sierra Online, 1995)

Who knew that Al Lowe, best known for his Leisure Suit Larry series, could make a fairy tale game as well! However, it did look a little familiar...so much so, it was often referred to as "King's Quest 8" by Sierra adventure fans. However, a faux KQ8 would turn out to be a very good thing, with no new King's Quests for another 3 years...and with Sierra sold by that time --with Roberta Williams going on a game designer sabbatical-- that also meant no new King's Quests, ever! All that said, thank Al Lowe for Torin's Passage.

The story involves a mythical other planet, whose alternate lands are layers of the planet surface! Torin begins the game at the very top, "Earth" level of the planet, and slowly goes level by level towards the planet's core, to help uncurse the planet's inhabitants...particularly his parents! The major selling point to the adventure was Torin's "pet" named Boogle, which can morph into any number of tools and objects you come across...if he's in the mood. This led to several unique puzzles, in addition to an amusing background story. The ending was a little too cute for its own good --and actually, a bit abrupt, I think-- though it was, at least, far far better than the most recent King's Quest 7 at the time. Sadly, though, this game did not receive as much publicity as the King's Quest series, and its shelf time was short...even if I enjoyed it.
