Treasure Quest

(Sirius Publishing, 1996)

Looking at Techtite's Review Archive, you can see how strong memories can be for both truly great and abysmally horrid games. Even so-so games are remembered. However, I needed to have my memory "nudged" a bit, to remember buying Treasure Quest at all. That's bad. Very, very, bad. Unfortunately, so was this game. Aside from guest star Terry Ferrel in the FMV scenes, there's not much to say about this game at all. This was supposed to be the adventure game of them all --the magnum opus of the genre-- where the first person to solve the adventure puzzles offered would win a cool million dollars...for real! The trouble is, while a million dollar contest would require puzzles a bit more challenging than "!!!SKCUS YLLAER TAHT EMAG A," the puzzles could not be solved. By anyone. Well, it took them three years to finally name a winner, who apparently bought the game for $3 in the bargain bin and felt what the hey. Did he solve it by hacking into the game and solving it the "easy" way? I doubt it matters anymore; he's lucky the company that made this game is still in business!

In the end, what should one rate a game he forgot even buying? Well, that's the puzzle. I suppose if it really, really stunk, I would've remembered the agony. I also am a major Terry Ferrel fan --the whole reason I bought the game in a fit of desperation for a new one-- so I'll cut this game some slack, and give it a near-miss. However, the very fact I'll probably forget even typing this page is good indication of how this game teeters on the bubble ever so closely to a drop-bottom burnout rating. So be it:

Rating : Near Miss.
