Twinsen's Odyssey
(Adeline/Activision, 1997)
This was of the best in the history of game
sequels; a sequel to the great game, Relentless
(aka, Little Big Adventure, as it was known in
Europe). Aliens have arrived to Twinsen's planet, from a neighboring
solar system, who may or may not be friendly. On the one hand,
their initial greeting is nice enough, though on the other hand,
some of them seem to shoot at Twinsen, at unexpected moments!
He soon finds himself hitching a ride to their home world, and
seeing what is going on for himself. As it so turns out, they
were a once benevolent planet, and are only being threatened
by an evil villain of prophesy, The Dark Monk! Who is
he, and can Twinsen stop him in time, saving two worlds
in the process? The answer is obvious, via an ending which rivals
the orignal game's, in thrill, fun, and ingenuity. Along the
way, you traverse most of your planet (and a lot of the alien
world!), spanning almost as much puzzle/map space as the original
game. You could even find numerous surprise animations and special
areas --"Easter Eggs," as most gamers like to call
them-- which I put in a special list in 1997, all by themselves
(see the note, after this game's rating,
for more!)
This game was Techtite's choice for Adventure
Game of the Year in 1997! The only reason it didn't make
Techtite's List of Top
50 Multimedia Classics, is simply because I only
wanted to list one of each game series (to avoid repitition),
and Relentless (aka Little Big Adventure
1) deserved this honor more. However, if you played one,
you must play them both; they are two of the most
entertaining graphic adventures I ever played!
| Also See Techtite's list of "Twinsen's Odyssey's
Easter Eggs!" Okay, yeah, so maybe this
list isn't all "Easter Eggs"
per se, yet it was a popular read, when I first posted
it to a newsgroup in 1997...So popular, in fact, I had to re-post
it after a few weeks, by request! It lists no less than 37 surprise animations and special
locations, that you might have missed. Check it out! |
