Ultima VIII: Pagan

(Origin, 1994)

One of the lesser Ultima sequels, this was the only new Ultima for five more years. The storyline was even more linear than Serpent Isle, with puzzles that were often a bit too cryptic for their own good (at one moment, you must find an ancient temple in the catacombs, almost by sheer accident). Prior to a well-deserved patch, the game also had an obscene amount of jumping puzzles, leading to the sarcastic term of "Super Mario Avatar" to describe this flaw. People felt that this was the worst Origin could do to the Ultima saga. Unfortunetely, via Ultima IX : Ascension, they were proven very wrong.

Rating : Near Miss.
