Wolf3D

(aka Castle Wolfenstein 3D)

(ID/Apogee, 1992)

A breakthrough in virtual reality gameplay, this game put you in an environment that was fluid 3D; the first game to ever give such an accurate feel of its environment. You had a full, 360 degree view of your world, in real time, and could turn to any angle, going essentially anywhere you wished, at will. While there were no staircases, nor any action above or below you, this was still an amazing feat at the time. The masterminds at ID were even able to do all this regardless of low CPU speed at the time; an added impressive feat. The action-savvy storyline, of a lone U.S. soldier behind enemy Nazi likes in WW2, was equally intriguing and entertaining. By game's end, you even got to defeat Hitler himself, in all his glory! Cool...so cool, in fact, this game is in Techtite's list of Top 50 Best Multimedia Classics. Deservedly so; while ID would tweak this exact same game engine for several more years, this was the original, unique concept that inspired them all.
