Zork I: The Great Underground Empire

(Infocom, 1980)

The last (alphabetical) member of Techtite's List of Top 50 Multimedia Classics, is also the best. This was the game to put adventure gaming on the map. While some of the puzzle strength was in finding out what --if anything-- the text parser would allow you to type in as a command, the story was inspired and thought-provoking. To quote the classic line from The Washington Post, "If it's 2 in the morning, it must be ZORK. Not even Ted Koppel can keep the nation up so late." It spawned countless sequels, spin-offs and game "clones," which is no surprise. Zork is a classic to the highest degree!

Rating : Deep Impact
