Wedding Crashers

A Review by Techtite

I'm a big fan of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels; so much so, I often wonder why so few clones of that movie have ever been attempted. It's just how brilliantly funny it was to see Steve Martin and Michael Caine try and pull "the big scam" only to often be scammed themselves. If you were to ask me, that's the sort of mischief behind Wedding Crashers...and that's exactly why this comedy will be a hit. You read it here last.

The story is about two divorce attorneys named Jeremy (Vince Vaughn) and John (Owen Wilson). As you'd expect, these divorce attorneys have no trust in relationships. They do still need to date however, so where do two lawyers go? Of course; weddings! Here's the catch: they are never invited to any, so they "crash" them, under various pseudonyms. The opening of the movie shows these scoundrel's many "conquests," and the many dirty lies they used to get the girl. You may wonder how they are able to get away with all this without getting caught, but that's a thought best left on the back burner. In fact; it's a thought oddly never pursued by the film itself. This is a comedy, after all. Just have fun.

As in all typical comedies, these two are about to pursue "the big one" in wedding crashing. The daughter of a big politician is about to get married, and that means a big wedding to crash. Why? Well...why not? The answer to that last question is the core of this film's story, as every single thing that could go wrong in wedding crashing...does. The kooky Gloria (Isla Fisher) gets an almost "Fatal Attraction" style crush on Jeremy. Meanwhile, John falls for the maid of honor, Claire (Rachel McAdams), who seems to have been cut from the same darkly cynical cloth he has. In fact; John is so smitten with her, he jumps at the chance to join other "family members" at their home for the weekend. Sure that means bad news for Jeremy with Gloria in tow, but that's half the "funny."

True, the resulting story is no Animal House...or Ferris Beueller's Day Off...or Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, for that matter. Yet this is still one of the funniest comedies I've seen in years. Owen and Vince are a perfectly cast comedy duo. Rachel McAdams may often be a "scoundrel" in her own right elsewhere in cinema, but she performs her role here brilliantly, as the "nice rich girl" John falls for. As for Isla Fisher, her role as the lovelorn Gloria is by far the funniest part of the film. Even mere seconds shown of her in commercials make the movie look funny. You can imagine how much funnier these moments are in the full movie.

True, this all leads to a crowd-pleaser ending; a bittersweet flaw to the tale. The love that blossoms among lies between John and Claire is even less likely than what happens between Gloria and Jeremy, which I will not spoil for you here. In the end, this may not be one of the bigger classics in cinema comedy, yet it's still ten times funnier than the flatulent cliché that comedy has become these days. Just about anyone will laugh at least once in this movie. Many of them will laugh many times. Some may even laugh throughout the movie. All of them should be glad to have seen it.

Final Rating : Large Crater. It may not seem sensible to root for such scoundrels, but it's funny.
