Disneyana Convention: 1995

(Convention Theme for '95: Happy Birthday, Donald!)

A Review by Techtite

My first Disneyana Convention had to start a little late, due to some graduate college classes I had to attend beforehand. Fortunately, I did not have classes for the remainder of the week, and could attend the entire last half of the convention! Unfortunately, one of the events I missed was a Theme Night, held in the Magic Kingdom's TomorrowLand! Darn; I missed it!

The final banquet night was fantastic. It was devoted to a salute to the late Howard Ashman, the other half of the Ashman & (Alan) Menken duo that created the music to The Little Mermaid, Beauty & the Beast, and Aladdin. Sadly, Howard passed away, soon before Aladdin was completed. Guests sang his award-winning songs, live, including many of the original voices of the characters from those films: Jodi Benson (Ariel from The Little Mermaid), Samuel E. Wright (who played Ariel's friend, Sebastian the Crab), and Paige O'Hara (Belle from Beauty & the Beast). A salute to one of Disney Studio's best modern songwriters was one thing; in-person, live cameos of the singing talent from those films, made it even more spectacular.

While my stay was short that year, it was enough to make me go again the very next year...and the year after...and the year after that! While the free, ceramic Donald Duck statue offered on Banquet Night was a little too fragile for its own good, the theme of "Donald's Birthday" was a lot of fun, and the salute to Howard Ashman was worth the whole trip in itself.

Final Rating : Deep Impact. A great stage slow saluting a late songwriter, with in-person cameos by Jodi Benson and many others. The collectibles offered were nice, too!
