"Certainly not the worst ending for a series (especially a sci-fi series!) though much like any story, not every mini-story ends with a happy note..."

The Rocky Road To Sci-Fi Series Finales. Think about this one: many sci-fi fans would call Star Trek The Next Generation's Series Finale the "best ever." Why? Not because of the ending per se: that's for sure. Captain Picard sits and plays poker with the rest of the crew for the first time ever. Well, that's just spiffy. It's still one of the best endings in sci-fi history, for no other reason than: most sci-fi shows end so horribly!

The honest truth is: even the mighty original Star Trek series ended with no real series finale. As for most other syndicated or rarely seen sci-fi: forget it. Friday the 13th's Jack and Micki never retrieved all the cursed artifacts. The hero of Time Trax never returned all escaped convicts to the future where they belong. As for the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica...we can only hope, right?

A Techtite Review

Sometimes good news has to be sifted from the bad. Take Jericho's first season, which ---don't shoot the messenger, please!--- didn't do so well in the Nielsen ratings. Hey; don't look at me. I never missed an episode, so I did my part! But I digress. At least CBS agreed to air Jericho: The Second Season at all, in an attempt to wrap up all the loose plot threads of this cult hit post-apocalyptic drama. As a result, this season gave fans the sendoff the series deserved. Perhaps that's the reason I liked this season so much...regardless of a few tiny flaws.

"Flaws"...? Maybe it's nitpicking, though I wish this second season hadn't added plots, instead of ending the plots the series already had with more gusto. The love story between high school sweethearts Jake (Skeet Ulrich) and Emily (Ashley Scott) was seemingly abandoned. Other stories were similarly given a back seat, as a new story took over, of Major Edward Beck (Esai Morales) placed in charge of Jericho. While this was a rather good story arc, it had no place in a season that was supposed to complete the series, per se. Yet Major Beck's story was suddenly the new prime focus of the series, as some of the series' most enduring characters became supporting players at best, and mere episode "cameo" appearances at worst. Darn.

However, I used the term "nitpicking" in that paragraph for a reason: that's exactly what the above complaints are. The majority of the season was a very well orchestrated sendoff for the series, with plots that meshed together admirably well in the (presumed) series finale. We see one of the biggest arch-nemesis of Jericho get his just reward. We learn the general "who" and "why" of the attack that led to the series' core story, of a small town in a post-apocalyptic nation. Yes, some questions are unanswered, though for the most part, those are immaterial.

The real question is: was the series given the ending fans were promised? I say: "yes." While the series finale itself did not tie up the story in a bow, it did wrap up the story admirably. Think of the first Star Wars movie, which showed the rebels enjoy their first big victory. Even if there wasn't more to the story: they won a very big battle, and were well on their way to winning the war. Spoilers intact, that's the sort of good feeling you get with this series' sendoff for Jericho.

That's about all I will say for now, given the spoiler nature of a review at the present time. When the DVD is released, I just may come back and give the DVD a thorough review, presuming the extra features of the DVD demand it. Either way; Jericho has been given its finale...and very few good dramas can say that.
