A Techtite
Review
It is hard to review a series as a whole, for obvious
reasons. Can you name one series that has been consistent throughout?
No, you cannot. Even Seinfeld, a "show about nothing," had a
very rocky start, and a downright disappointing final season. The
typical drama has characters who come and go like there was a revolving
door attached to the script room. Even when a series has consistent lead
stars throughout, the end result is a series that cannot be pigeonholed
into "one" review, or at least not very easily.
Perhaps that is the best part about the TV series
Lost as a whole. Not one single season was
comparable to one another, and yet to this TV critic, they were all
excellent in their own special way. While each fan has their favorite
seasons: every season was pivotal to the story, which unlike many shows,
had a definitive beginning, middle, and end. It is immaterial if you
loved or hated the series finale. It was a story worth telling, and in
the end: I look very forward to buying it as a complete series...when
I can afford it!
Of course, any review of a complete series requires
encapsulated reviews of each season. Here we go:
Season 1.
In short summary: The season that started it
all. The Short Review: The
best part is that for the first time in my collective memory the first
season of a drama was actually one of the best seasons of them all. From
the mysterious French lady to the even more mysterious Black Rock, this
was one whale of a an awesome piece of television...only to have Emmy
severely snub the season by summertime.
The best part: John Locke is revealed to have been
permanently paralyzed immediately before coming to the island, leading
millions of viewers to drop their jaws in surprise...
The weakest part: NONE. The only
gripes are purely of the nitpicking variety...although it did seem a bit
odd that the castaways were surprisingly complacent, for many episodes,
right after Claire was kidnapped. Final
"Techtite" Rating:
Deep
Impact.
Season 2.
In short summary: The Season of The Hatch!
The Short Review: This was
basically the season with one key focus: the hatch that was opened in
the season one cliffhanger, its significance, and the potential
repercussions of the castaways fooling around with the scientific
equipment they find down there! The best
part: The whole season was fabulous, and yet my favorite
moment would have to be the season finale, where we learn about the tale
of Desmond and Penny, one of the most "lovable" love stories I have ever
seen on television. The
weakest part: While many fans love and miss "Mister Eko,"
it is sad to realize how worthless (or at least how very mishandled) the
whole subplot of the "tail section" was. In short: the main characters
discover additional castaways who survived when the tail section of the
plane hit the water...only to have these new characters slowly get
killed off, one by one, with the sole exception of Bernard.
Final "Techtite" Rating:
Deep Impact.
Season 3.
In short summary: Our heroes' looooong trek back
from being kidnapped by "The Others"...!
The Short Review: Many a cynic will tell you this season
was "the worst." Well, not exactly. Yes, there was way too much
time wasted as Jack, Kate, and Sawyer attempted to escape the "others"
on the island, and get back to their friends. However, let's be fair.
This was also the season that introduced Juliet, the "Other" with a very
sad story to tell, who quite frankly slowly became one of my favorite
characters of the whole series. It was also the season that delved into
the many shenanigans of the now infamous Benjamin Linus, who is now one
of my favorite TV villains of all time! Oh, and who can forget that
brilliant cliffhanger, where suddenly, without warning, the flashbacks
become flash forwards, and in the future...Jack wants to go back
to the island. Whaaat...? The
best part: Naysayers may disagree, though there were
actually many great moments this season, culminating in a totally
awesome beach battle between six castaways and the "Others" who held
them at gunpoint. Everything seems hopeless...until a suddenly heroic
Hurley saves the day! Yeah!
The weakest part: On the other hand: yeah, this
was certainly the weakest season of all six, though that isn't really
saying much. Final "Techtite" Rating:
Large
Crater.
Season 4.
In short summary: The Oceanic Six!
The Short Review: Six
castaways make it home...though which six? That is the question that is
brilliantly answered, episode by episode, in a season which might be the
shortest of all six, yet is also the most involved. A team of scientists
are sent to the island, including such now memorable "newcomers" as
Daniel the quirky lovelorn quantum physicist, Miles the psychic (of
sorts), and the shaggy haired crackpot pilot Lapidus, among others. Yet
along for the ride are a legion of mercenaries who want to commandeer
the whole island...by killing all its current inhabitants! Oh, and while
all this is happening, our favorite castaways try to escape the island,
as flash-forwards show us why that may or may not be the best idea!
The best part: Without a
doubt, that one moment Desmond and Penny reunite was simply...epic.
The weakest part:
None! The only sad part of this season is how short it
was, strictly due to a "strike" at the time, which forced the season to
be abridged. The season still feels surprisingly complete, though.
However; I guess it is a review in itself when I say that many fans wish
this season was longer than it was. Final
"Techtite" Rating:
Deep
Impact.
Season 5.
In short summary: Dharma: up close and in
person! The Short Review:
[everybody sing!] Let's do the time warp again! Suddenly; the
majority of your favorite characters have somehow been shot back in time
to 1978, when the island was commandeered by a gang of quirky new age
scientist type folk, who tried to exploit the island to discover its
many secrets. It would appear that these are the knuckleheads who
drilled into the ground releasing the energy burst that would
eventually, in the future, cause the castaways' plane to crash. Can our
heroes change their own history...and do they really want to?
The best part: The big plot twist
of how Locke can possibly be back from the dead was
another brilliant plot twist in Lost history.
The weakest part: It is
never made clear exactly why Sun was not sent back in time...or Lapidus...or
Ben, for that matter. Final "Techtite"
Rating:
Deep
Impact.
Season 6.
In short summary: The (literal) End.
The Short Review: Why
settle for the short review? I reviewed this season in full,
here. The
best part: If not for the final 5 minutes of the finale,
and that horrid final plot twist; the finale was actually very good!
The weakest part: With
only a few more episodes to go, this season should not have taken so
many tangents, with such irrelevant subplots as "the origin of Jacob"
(which frankly was not half as exciting of a story as anyone hoped for)
and the seemingly irrelevant "temple." Though even worse; Jin and Sun
decide they should die together, in a poignant moment that was actually
pretty boneheaded, because...Jin? You have a daughter back home. And now
she is an orphan. "Oops" is putting it mildly!
Final "Techtite" Rating: While the final 5
minutes of the finale were a disappointment, the
overall season more than deserves a very solid
Deep
Impact.
...So, all that said: what more needs to be said? Not
much. This is by far and wide one of my most favorite memories in all of
TV history. To date, the series has been frequently imitated, never
duplicated. Oh, and it will be very, very missed. So, what are you
waiting for? Buy it on DVD today!
