Hexen 2
(Activision/Raven, 1997)
Here's a game history question
for you: which came next...? Doom comes out in 1993, followed closely by
the amusing magical Doom clone, Heretic. Then came a sort of spin-off of
Heretic, called Hexen. What comes next...? If you said Heretic 2 that's
where you'd be wrong; it was actually a sequel to Hexen.
Why...? That's
one of the many mysteries behind this so-so- sequel. On the plus
side, it used the Quake
game engine, providing 3D acceleration, impressive frame rates,
and intriguing gameplay. However, Raven didn't seem to improve
on the game engine half as much as they probably should have.
After all, what they did with the original Doom
engine, led to Heretic,
and a whole new way of looking at the Doom-clone genre. Gamers
expecting something similar here will be disappointed; an acceptable
game, that could've been a lot more...
