Hocus Pocus

(Apogee, 1994)

Most of the games in Techtite.com's list of Top 50 Multimedia Classics are there because they were the first in a genre; years ahead of their time. This game made the list, by contrast, because it was arguably the last of the best in its genre; the most vibrant, Technicolor marvel in 2D side-scrolling gaming I've ever seen. In short time, 3D games --and later, 3D accelerators-- would take over gaming forevermore. However, while such gaming gained a great deal in technology, it would also lose part of itself, and leave it far behind. To anyone yearning for the golden age of gaming, you can do far worse than searching online for Apogee's Hocus Pocus; the last of the best in 2D. With its amusing enemies, sound FX, music by "The Fat Man" (of Seventh Guest fame), and a two-layered background behind the windows that scrolls slower than the foreground ( for an effective 3D/2D effect), this was one of my favorite of all games in '94...
