Prince of Persia 3D

(Red Orb/The Learning Co., 1999)

Let me say one thing, before writing this --very-- sad review summary; Jordon Mechner is a legend in game design. His timeless works include Karateka, which made it into Techtite's List of Top 50 Multimedia Classics. Soon after, he made a fantastic game called Prince of Persia, which soon led to an amusing sequel, Prince of Persia 2. Each game included amusing action and fighting game elements, along with a thought-provoking puzzle on occasion (like how to avoid a trap); fun, classic games. That's what makes Prince of Persia 3D such a major (and I do mean, major) surprise...and disappointment. But what can one expect, from a game that accredits Mechner --the creator of the game series-- as merely a "consultant"...???

The concept here seems like a cool idea at first, thrusting the classic Prince of Persia 2D game saga into a modern, 3D game engine. However, the game engine they used for this task is truly horrid; it's a challenge just to get the hero to walk! The result is animation that is choppier than even the oldest of 3D game titles; the prince takes one step, there's a short pause, and then he steps forward again. You can imagine how difficult fighting, avoiding traps, and re-loading a game is, given how hard is to even get the hero to walk! By the game's lackluster finale, you are merely glad it's all over, disappointing as it is to say...

Rating : Burnout.
