Resident Evil 2

(Capcom, 1999)

It's very rare that a sequel exceeds even its original; this is definitely one of those times. Following in the footsteps of the underdog smash hit, Resident Evil , this game involves relatives of the prior game's heroes, who go to meet them in a nearby town, on that same day...and get the "zombie" surprise of their lives! While the prior game similarly offered the chance to play as either a hero or heroine, this game offered entirely different game puzzles and challenges, depending on the character selected! They even offer alternate discs for each; disc 1 was for the hero Leon, disc 2 was for the heroine Claire. If, for example, you finished the game as Leon, you could then insert the Claire CD, and play an entirely different version of her game, based entirely on Leon's actions (doors he unlocked would be open, ammo he took would be gone; talk about added challenges!). Play the game long enough, and you even get to play as "secret characters," like a military assassin soldier, or as...well, you'd have to see "tofu" to believe it! This was a smash hit on the Playstation, so on the PC, 3D accelerated, it could only get better and better...

Rating : Deep Impact.
