Rise of the Triad : Dark War

(Apogee, 1995)

This was perhaps one of the last of the great Doom clones, before the following year put Quake on the map, as well as the first generation of (decent) hardware 3D accelerators. The storyline involved a special forces unit asked to defend Earth from...well, you know, the bad guys. While this was cliche, other game elements were not, including numerous ingenius uses of a 3D game engine. Among many unique additions were bounce disks (or whatever) which would shoot the hero up into the air, allowing you to reach special power-ups, floating high above you. Obstacles were gruesome yet challenging, including some very annoying spinning blades. One cute added touch was the ability to choose from numerous soldiers, both male and female; the voice heard during the mission would be different, based on this choice (some even had impressive dialects). While the thrill of this game was over as soon as the following year, it was worth playing for action-fans.

Rating : Small Crater.
