The X-Files
(adventure game)
(Fox Interactive, 1998)
Am I the only one who liked the
adventure game based on The X-Files? Apparently. However, I
would never win a debate on the subject, because it's certainly not like I
was enamored over the experience of playing it. I just remember owning a
rather dated laptop PC, where I was able to play this game on it at a time
when I was out of town for an extended period of time. I guess even the
most meager form of computer entertainment can be considered a lifesaver
in such circumstances. It also demands mentioning that this will
inevitably be the one and only major X-Files game ever made; it was put on
the drawing boards way back at the show's peak, and let's just say it's
not peaking anymore. It's this game for fans, or none at all.
Admittedly, this isn't a rousing
endorsement. It wasn't meant to be. This game's biggest flaw was nearly
worth a "What Went Wrong?" column entry, if the flaws weren't
largely due to one sole goof: enlisting David Duchovney (Mulder) and
Gillian Anderson (Scully) in a project at a time when they were both giddy
with prima-donna glee at their newfound fame. In other words, while
they're indeed in this game, they're in it only near the finale. I presume
this is because the finale was completed near the start of the project;
the rest of the game looks like mere filler. However, I was amused enough
at said "filler" to be entertained enough to sway this game to
marginal-thumbs-up category. Interpret that as you will, since that's as
far as I will go to compliment the game-I-played-while-away...
